As with any healthcare provider, the relationship you have with that person is key to the healing process. It is important to take time to find the right practitioner for you, with whom you are comfortable sharing your health history, so that you can work together to set goals for your treatment. Each practitioner has something unique to offer to the patient.
Don’t hesitate to ask a practitioner if they offer complementary consultations before beginning a treatment plan. This will help you determine if the practitioner is someone you will be comfortable working with. Upon request, I provide 20-30 minute complementary consultations in my office which is an opportunity for you to ask questions pertinent to how we will work together.
A Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.) in Virginia must be nationally certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), and licensed through the Virginia Board of Medicine. All states have different requirements, but in general, a Licensed Acupuncturist has a graduate degree in Oriental Medicine from a school that is recognized by the NCCAOM. Other healthcare practitioners such as Medical Doctors, Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, etc., can be certified to use acupuncture as a adjunct treatment modality in their practice, usually with a requirement of 200-300 hours of acupuncture training.
For further information, see the link above. For Oriental medicine education and certification requirements, see http://www. nccaom.org.
